These guidelines are intended to assist those responsible for above ground oil storage tanks at sites other than oil refineries and distribution depots. They are jointly produced by the Environment Agency for England and Wales, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and the Environment and Heritage Service in Northern Ireland, referred to as the Agency or Agencies. In England, the storage of oils (except waste oils) is regulated under the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001. The regulations apply to industrial, commercial and institutional sites storing more than 200 litres of oil and private dwellings storing more than 3,500litres.

These guidelines are intended to assist in deciding on the need for an oil separator at a site and the size and type of separator which is appropriate.  Certain major sites, such as oil refineries and bulk storage depots, will require specialised facilities and are outside the scope of this document. The guidelines are produced by the Environment Agency for England and Wales, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and the Environment and Heritage Service in Northern Ireland, referred to as the Agency or Agencies. Sites are considered according to the individual circumstances and early consultation with your local Agency office is therefore advisable.

These guidelines have been drawn up to assist all those who may have cause to work in or near watercourses. Theyhave been jointly produced by the Environment Agency for England and Wales, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and the Environment and Heritage Service in Northern Ireland, referred to as the Agency or Agencies. Compliance with this guidance should minimise the risk of pollution occurring. Every site is different and will need to beconsidered individually.  Consultation with your local Agency office is advisable before any work is started.
